Number of People in the Group

A premium crewed charter offers the experience of a hotel, with the added bonus of enjoying stunning scenery and new places to explore. However, a sail yacht remains small enough to ensure privacy and exclusivity, which would not be the case on board a larger cruise ship.

Most of the sail yachts available for charter can accommodate at least six passengers, and larger vessels up to twelve people. If you charter a yacht without a crew or just with a skipper (rather than a premium crew), the costs are the same whether you are just two on board or an entire family. Traveling with a group can, in many cases, lower the price per person below €900 per head.

If you opt for a premium crewed charter, there are obviously per-person costs to consider. However, traveling with a larger group can help reduce the overall cost per person even further.

What is included in the cost of renting a yacht varies depending on whom you are renting from and what type of charter you choose.

For example, the price of a bare yacht charter includes various elements, such as water, snorkeling equipment, and compulsory insurance. It also includes mooring costs in port for your voyage’s first and last night. The rest is up to you: with a bare yacht charter, you are responsible for arranging provisioning, mooring costs, fuel, and all optional activities.

At the other end of the scale, the price of a cabin charter – where you book a cabin aboard a pre-arranged cruise – usually includes almost everything you need for your vacation. Meals, drinks, snacks, water toys, and local routes are likely to be included in your rate. Depending on your supplier, alcoholic beverages may be charged in addition to your cabin fare.

Suppose you opt for a more personalized Premium crewed charter. In that case, the rate will generally include accommodation for your group on the private yacht, all meals and snacks provided according to your preferences, alcoholic beverages, water toys, personalized itineraries, and only a captain and a hostess at your service.

For crewed charters, remember to always factor gratuity into the overall fare of your trip, as well as extras, such as optional excursions and meals at local destinations. Most crewed rentals are likely to include water toys, such as kayaks and paddleboards.

Insurance and Taxes

Your charter rate may include a basic level of insurance as a standard requirement (in some locations, this is a mandatory requirement for docking). However, it is strongly recommended that you have your travel insurance before you depart and ensure it covers navigation.

Don't forget to check if your rental costs include local taxes, varying from less than 5% to more than 20%, depending on the country.
